What the published studies found
Early evidence · 2 studies
Fungal Infection
Available evidence consists of in-vitro studies showing citronella (Cymbopogon nardus) essential oil inhibits Candida albicans planktonic cells and biofilms (MIC 125-250 µg/mL), with synergistic effects alongside amphotericin B and enhanced activity in nanoemulsion form. No human clinical trials or RCTs for fungal infection treatment were identified among the results reviewed.

Burns/Wound Healing
A single preclinical study (PMID 27445828) found that Cymbopogon nardus (citronella) essential oil exhibited in vitro anti-Candida activity (MIC 25-50 µg/mL) and accelerated healing of Candida-infected diabetic wounds in mice by reducing fungal load and inflammatory cytokines, confirmed by histopathology. No human clinical trials have evaluated citronella oil for burns or wound healing.

Joint Inflammation
A single 2024 preclinical study found that citronella essential oil reduced joint swelling, neutrophil infiltration, and proinflammatory cytokine secretion in rodents with monosodium urate-induced gouty arthritis, likely via suppression of PI3K/Akt/mTOR-driven NLRP3 inflammasome activation and oxidative stress. No human clinical trials or systematic reviews exist for citronella oil and joint inflammation.

Muscle Pain
A single preclinical study found that Cymbopogon nardus (citronella) essential oils from Benin and Congo exhibited analgesic activity in rodent pain models (acetic acid-induced writhing, hot plate, and tail flick tests), with regional chemotype differences affecting potency. No human clinical trials or RCTs exist evaluating citronella oil for muscle pain.

Rosacea
A single in vitro study (PMID 37228784) found citronella oil killed Demodex folliculorum mites—which are linked to rosacea—outperforming ivermectin 1% and metronidazole 0.75%, though it ranked below several other essential oils (lemongrass, sweet basil, clove, tea tree). No clinical trials or human studies exist evaluating citronella oil for rosacea itself.
